After investing your valuable time and money in the teeth whitening process, the last thing you want is for pigmented, yellow stains to resurface. Fortunately, there are a few proactive measures you can take to keep your smile bright and beautiful, like being selective about what you eat! With this in mind, keep reading to learn four foods you should avoid after whitening your teeth.

4 Foods You Should Avoid After Whitening Your Teeth

To prevent stubborn stains from resurfacing shortly after your whitening treatment, we recommend avoiding the following:

  • Acidic Foods – Since your enamel is slightly weakened during the brightening process, it’s best to avoid pineapples, tomatoes, sauerkraut, and other highly acidic foods.
  • Dark Sauces – It won’t take long for soy sauce, tomato sauce, BBQ sauce, and marinara sauce to stain your teeth, so it’s best to avoid them as much as possible.
  • Foods That Contain Natural or Artificial Dyes – Popsicles and certain candies contain dyes that can leave behind noticeable stains, which is why you shouldn’t eat them.
  • Dark-Colored Fruits and Vegetables – Immediately following your teeth whitening treatment, you shouldn’t eat purple cabbage, beets, cherries, and the like.

6 Smile-Friendly Foods That Won’t Stain Your Teeth

Fortunately, there are lots of foods that you can eat following your teeth whitening treatment, including:

  • Plain yogurt
  • Bananas
  • Oatmeal
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Apples
  • White fish

It’s also a good idea to make water your go-to beverage. Not only will it keep you hydrated, but it will help prevent dry mouth and remove food particles from your teeth!

Remember, A Solid Dental Care Routine Is Just As Important

Being selective about what you eat and drink immediately following your teeth whitening treatment will go a long way when it comes to preserving your results. Of course, it’s equally as important that you commit to good oral hygiene habits at home (i.e., brushing twice a day, flossing each night, rinsing with mouthwash consistently) and avoid doing anything that could stain your teeth, like smoking. If you notice that your teeth are starting to take on a yellow hue, reach out to your dentist so they can schedule a touch-up appointment!
